Cowes Week 2018 – Friday 10th August

Cowes Week 2018

Nikon Training UK organised a boat for a day to follow the racing and provide photo opportunities.

With winds up to Force 9, big seas and heavy rain racing was cancelled for most classes so there weren’t going to be any opportunities for the usual images of the yachts with their colourful spinnakers flying.

As I have my own yacht I have plenty of opportunities for that so, instead, it was an chance to try and capture the jeopardous atmosphere, the power of the sea and the challenge of sailing in seriously difficult and dangerous conditions.

To emphasize how treacherous the conditions were, sadly one yachtsman died on the day after going overboard and getting tangled in the main sheets.  I must say that I was shocked at the number of yachtsmen and women who appeared not to be wearing a life jacket or using safety lines.

Any damn fool can navigate the world sober. It takes a really good sailor to do it drunk.

  1. Lifejackets were mandatory. The wind was up to force 9(46 knots). Thanks for the great shot of ‘Jack Rabbit’ NED 6809 (34/35).

What do you think?
